Five Deadly Sins $11.99 This highly original band from the Corona area outside of Los Angeles constantly changed and rearranged their sound before splitting off into various bands, including Syncopation, who includes three of the five original Los Cincos. They began as a highly competent garage band banging out some impressive sounds in L.A.’s coziest dives like Jabberjaw and The Smell. Then, they came up with a sort of circus-inspired groove, as the bandmembers began exchanging instruments mid-set and went off into more experimental directions. There’s a psychedelic thing going on, too. This is about when they released The Five Deadly Sins, which includes one of their best songs, “Kissing at the Carnival.” The album is basically a rock album with some sizzling organs and pounding drums and includes all the styles mentioned above. Two of Los Cincos are exceptional drummers: Sir Robert James Adams III and Jeremy Szuder. Otherwise, there’s not much to the lyrics and the vocals are just adequate. Los Cincos were essentially a superb jam band and best experienced live. But Five Deadly Sins is probably the most interesting record they ever released. ~ Adam Bregman |

The film opens with the godfather (Yuya Uchida) of the Sanada-gumi being targeted for a hit. The hired gun, however, finds the old goat less than willing to die. Of course, the murder infuriates the clan’s second-in-command Kunisada (Riki Takeuchi) who viewed the slain crime boss as in own flesh and blood. He, along with his henchman Shimatani (Kenichi Endo), discover that the guy who ordered the hit was Otaki (Renji Ishibashi), the head of a rival gang. The Deadly Spawn – Dolby $14.99 A meteorite crashes to earth during a torrential thunderstorm, bringing with it a slimy, three-headed alien beast that craves human meat and gives birth to hundreds of eel-like spawn. The monster takes up residence in the basement of a family home, devouring the parents without anyone else’s knowledge. The oldest son Pete (Michael Robert Coleman) is a science major in college, and his younger brother Charles (Charles George Hildebrandt) is a horror movie fanatic who loves to dress up like his favorite monsters and scare his visiting aunt and uncle. When an electrician arrives to check the fuse box, Charles follows him into the basement in costume for a little fun, but instead discovers the hideous alien and what’s left of his mother’s corpse. Meanwhile, two of Pete’s friends come over for a study session, bringing along the remains of a dead alien spawn that they found on the side of the road. Baffled, they dissect it in an effort to establish its origin, but it seems to defy everything they’ve ever been taught in class. Deadly Duo – Dubbed Subtitle $14.99 This fast-paced action film from the Shaw Brothers studios takes its inspiration from the events of the Sung Dynasty. The story begins with Bao Ting-tien (Ti Lung), the leader of a group of Sung rebels, attempting to rescue a prince from the Ching forces that have overtaken northern China. Bao crosses paths with Little Bat (David Chiang), a mysterious kung-fu expert, and the two decide to team up so they can pull off this daring mission. Unfortunately for both men, the odds are stacked against them — their mission involves crossing a long, perilous rope bridge and storming into a compound guarded by countless soldiers. The action that follows involves heroic sacrifices, cliffhangers galore and plenty of bloodshed.
