In the Empire of Izmer, magic is the key to power in both the supernatural and political realms. The Mages are a sect who know the secrets of magic and use it to hold sway over the masses. The youthful Empress Savina (Thora Birch) wants to use her powers to bring justice and prosperity to all, but Profion (Jeremy Irons) is an evil Mage who wants to use his knowledge of magic to overthrow Savina and establish his own despotic rule. Through deceitful means, Profion wins away the special scepter that allows him to control the nation’s Golden Dragons; Savina’s only hope to recover the scepter and the rule of Izmer is to obtain the Rod of Savrille, a talisman that will give her powers over the Red Dragons, even more powerful than their golden counterparts. As Savina sets out to gain control of the Red Dragons, she gains a number of unlikely allies, including a pair of thieves, Snails (Marlon Wayans) and Ridely (Justin Whalin); a powerful dwarf, Elwood (Lee Arenberg); and Norda (Kristen Wilson), an elf with a gift for finding lost objects. Dungeons & Dragons also features Zoe McLellan, Bruce Payne, and Richard O’Brien, the latter of whom is best known as the writer and co-star of the perennial cult item The Rocky Horror Picture Show. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God Put down that 24-sided die and return to the fantastic world of Dungeons & Dragons in this magical adventure from director Gerry Lively. Modern Marvels: Castles & Dungeons - $19.99 Explore darkened dungeons and gaze down from atop high towers as Modern Marvels reveals how medieval castles were much more than just a place for kings to call home. Massive and imposing, these formidable edifices were constructed with such architectural flourishes as moats and murder holes that made them both practical and impenetrable. The inclusion of prisons, courthouses, and treasuries ensured that some castles were virtual communities unto themselves. But violate a king’s decree, and you could likely end up in the last place many criminals were likely to see – the dreaded torture chamber. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Dragons and Rings - $14.99 Explore the questions that are too controversial to be addressed by contemporary scientists and archeologists as host Steve Mitchell takes viewers on a fascinating voyage into a world where fantasy, mystery, and myth collide. In a world where ancient stone monoliths, mysterious crop circles, and strange tales of dragons case mankind to constantly question their unique role as the keepers of planet Earth, some of our greatest mysteries could perhaps be solved by linking quantum theory with UFOs, paranormal activities, and ancient wisdom passed down through the centuries. Could it be that ancient stone circles are somehow tied to crop circles and the UFO phenomena? Was there an ancient human race that possessed extensive knowledge of various inter-dimensional realities? If so, perhaps we can gain a better understanding of our surroundings by simply taking a look into the past, and opening our minds to the endless possibilities of our mysterious universe. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

The Flight of Dragons – Fullscreen $14.99 This animated fantasy film, from the creators of The Last Unicorn, unfolds in an age when magic and science coexist uneasily, and humans still walk the earth alongside wizards, unicorns, and dragons. One of the four most powerful mages on the planet, Carolinus the Green Wizard (voice of Harry Morgan) realizes that magic’s power is slipping in favor of the logic of science — a potential detriment to men, who need such magic to provide regular inspiration for themselves. Carolinus thus summons his three brothers for an emergency t?te-?-t?te, and suggests that they create a separate magical realm for themselves, via which they can send man the magic he needs on a regular basis. Two of the brothers agree, but the third — the evil wizard Ommadon — not only refuses to be shuttled off to this removed existence but vows to wage full-scale war on humankind with evil feelings and ideas. Because the rules of the universe forbid Carolinus and his other two siblings from going head-to-head with Ommadon, they must seek out a human hero with the power to stop him. Carolinus sends this request to the Fates. They, in turn, select Peter (voiced by John Ritter), who is, of all things, a man of science. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi |

Other Heep highlights include the album-opening folk rocker “The Wizard” (not the same similarly-titled song by another British metal band–Black Sabbath) and the space rocker “Traveller in Time.” |

He Poos Clouds $15.98 Owen Pallett, the man behind the curtain of Toronto’s aptly named Final Fantasy, describes He Poos Clouds as “an eight-song cycle about the eight schools of magic in Dungeons & Dragons.” Deception (when used correctly) is one of the oldest and truest art forms, and Pallett should get an award for not producing either a wimpy and ironic whine-fest that utilizes childhood fantasies to dispel adult social anxieties or a sardonic lo-fi power metal record that pays “tribute” to the sword-wielding epics of Iron Maiden and Dio. Instead, the one-man classically trained Canadian string section — think Andrew Bird and Patrick Wolf — has created a gem of a baroque pop record that manages to appeal to both the bespectacled hipster and the disgruntled orchestra student. Employing a measured croon caught somewhere between Scott Walker and Louis Philippe with a soft Donovan-esque vibrato, Pallett assumes the position of narrator on the opening track, an ornate snapshot of youthful longing that manages to balance lyrics like “she has a heart that will never melt” and “but the quarry don’t share his taste for Anne McCaffery” with equal parts heartbreak and bravado — he shares more than a little in common, both musically and lyrically, with the Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon. Alternately dissonant and willfully melodic, each track that follows carries with it the possibility of either a crushing sigh of defeat (“I’m Afraid of Japan”) or a violent outburst of passion (the one-two punch of the lilting and rhythmic “Song Song Song” and ultra-dramatic/dynamic “Many Lives 49 MP”), making He Pools Clouds far more dangerous than it is cloying and pretentious, despite all of its intentions otherwise. ~ James Christopher Monger |

Star Fall (Bonus Track) (Japan) $47.99 Although the power metal revival movement of the ’90s and 2000s has had some worthwhile American bands, the majority of participants have been from Western Europe — some from Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands, some from Great Britain, some from Italy and Spain, some from the Scandinavian countries. And one of the many Scandinavian power metal revival outfits is Sweden’s Dragonland, who show no awareness of post-’80s metal trends on the proudly retro Starfall. Sweden, of course, had a ton of death metal/black metal activity in the ’90s and early to mid-’00s, but there isn’t a trace of death metal or black metal on Starfall; nor is there any alternative metal, rap-metal or metalcore influence on this disc. Although recorded in 2003 and 2004, Starfall is a total throwback to the old-school power metal of the ’70s and ’80s — and this grandiose, elaborate effort (which is full of stereotypical dungeons-and-dragons lyrics) gets a great deal of inspiration from progressive rock as well. Dragonland’s hard-rocking yet consistently melodic approach is best described as Iron Maiden, Queensr?che, Savatage and Manowar by way of Rush, Kansas, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer; this is a 2000s recording that sounds like it could have been made at least 20 years earlier. Dragonland isn’t the least bit groundbreaking — there are quite a few other European power metal revival acts that have been influenced by progressive rock and give the impression that they could enjoy Queensr?che’s Operation: Mindcrime one minute and Yes’ Tales from Topographic Oceans the next. But even though Starfall isn’t big on originality, the CD certainly deserves credit for craftsmanship and quality. And while Starfall isn’t remarkable, it is an enjoyable (if derivative) effort that is worth hearing if one is a die-hard power metal enthusiast who also appreciates progressive rock. ~ Alex Henderson |

He goes on a jolt spree and almost kills the rest of the crew. A robot priest offers him the Good Book 3.0 and he kicks his addiction by finding religion. Fry and Leela want the old Bender back, so they take him out for a night of corruption and he ends up paying for his sins in robot hell. In the tradition of the song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” Fry and Leela try to win back his soul by battling the robot devil Beelzebot (voice of Dan Castellaneta) in a fiddle contest. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi Futurama: Anthology of Interest I In the season finale episode, “Anthology of Interest I,” Professor Farnsworth unveils his “What-if” machine and Bender, Leela, and Fry each get a chance to ask it a question. Bender asks what it would be like if he were 500 feet tall, so he becomes a giant and flies to Earth to the tune of Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” He befriends a boy (Fry) and accidentally destroys the city in a take on The Iron Giant. The Professor then makes Dr. Zoidberg a giant so they can fight each other. Leela asks what it would be like if she were more impulsive, so she ends up killing the Professor in order to get his fortune. As people find out about the murder, she is forced to kill them one by one until she has killed almost everyone. Fry asks what it would be like if he were never cryogenically frozen in 1999. He ends up meeting the Action Rangers — made up of scientist Stephen Hawking, Vice President Al Gore, Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols, and Dungeons and Dragons creator Gary Gygax. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi Futurama: Roswell That Ends Well No synopsis available. Now pick your jaw up off of the floor. Influenced in equal measure by Maiden and Mega Man, the band craft impossibly soaring, inspirational theme music to Dungeons and Dragons games yet to be played. Guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman simply astound as their Nintendo-honed fingers run up and down the fretboards with impossible velocity, and singer ZP Theart’s Steve Perry wailing could shatter glass. The uninitiated may find the excesses on VALLEY OF THE DAMNED to be intolerably ’80, and the lyrics about warriors and fantasy worlds are certainly the stuff of the terminally girlfriend-less. There’s nothing funny, however, about the album’s magnificent technique and deadly pop hooks. When they cut loose on dizzying songs like “Black Winter Night,” who cares if it’s cheesy? It shreds. |

Dragon’s World: A Fantasy Made Real – Widescreen Dubbed Subtitle $12.99 An alternate scientific history in which dragons were real and lived on this earth is imagined in this fantasy docudrama. Dr. Tanner (Paul Hilton) is a renegade scientist whose attempts to prove the existence of dragons — which he believes lived on this planet at the same time as dinosaurs — has cost him the respect of many in the archeological community. But a dig in Eastern Europe produced artifacts that suggests Tanner’s theories may be valid after all. With the help of two of his colleagues (Aidan Woodward and Katrine Bach), Tanner examines the remains of what appear to have been dragons, and as he explains how they lived, his tales come to life in flashbacks illustrated by computer graphics technology. Dragons’ World: A Fantasy Made Real was originally produced for the cable television network Animal Planet, where it first aired on March 20, 2005. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
