Among them were some Bobby Bare cuts: “Passing Through,” “Shut Your Face, I’m Talking to Your Head,” “Before You Die,” and “Take Me Home to Mama.” In the same year there was the song that Ralph Stanley would make his signature, Waylon Jennings’ “Man of Constant Sorrow.” In 1967 it was Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country,” and in 1968 it was Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” produced by Bob Johnston, Dylan’s producer. And in 1969, amid the ringing electric guitars of Randy Scruggs, Charlie McCoy’s harmonica, Charlie Daniels’ rhythm guitar, and others bluegrass “innovations,” it was over. Arguably the most famous duo in the history of bluegrass — eclipsing even the profile of the music’s founders, Bill Monroe (their former employer) and Ralph Stanley in the early ’60s — Flatt & Scruggs had a bitter parting of ways that would not be mended until Flatt was on his deathbed ten years later. This Bear Family set compiles the aforementioned tracks and five and a half more CDs, including Flatt’s last live date, all recorded for RCA between 1969 and 1978. Flatt, by far the more traditional of the two men, and ten years Scruggs’ senior, went to record with Mac Wiseman, Josh Graves, Marty Stuart, and a host of other traditional musicians — including Bill Monroe — on over ten albums’ worth of material both original and from the bluegrass canon. None of it matches the majesty of Flatt & Scruggs at their peak — and neither does Scruggs’ — but it is all worthwhile as a way of looking at how bluegrass music survived a particularly tumultuous era. Certainly, collectors will find the most use for these recordings, but their appeal cannot be denied because Flatt was the most original singer in the history of the music and remains so. His voice was far deeper than most, and his phrasing reflected the same mountains he grew up in until the end, no matter what he was singing. This set may not be for everyone, but for those who sprung for the other Flatt & Scruggs boxes, or have found them to be irresistible, this is fine traditional country music. ~ Thom Jurek |

All This & More $39.99 This four-disc set (three CDs/one DVD) is tempting in the extreme, in both its packaging and what it seems to offer — and it would seem to some that the first Procol Harum boxed set is long overdue. But it is almost certain to be a disappointment to all but the most hardcore fans of the group’s work, despite a valiant effort by the producers to make it impressive. On the plus side, although there have been no shortage of Procol Harum compilations, ranging from early best-of LPs on Fly and A&M to various double-disc sets, which seemingly culminated in 1997 with Westside Records’ 30th anniversary triple-CD anthology, this release is the first to encompass the complete history of the group across four decades. That said, however, it should also be cautioned that their “classic” period, from 1967 through 1982, is encompassed on the first two CDs, which leaves a good deal of space for the various reunions and tours that followed in the ’90s and beyond, none of which is half as interesting as the group’s early output.The first two discs do a fine job of representing their catalog, although any listeners expecting to hear their most AM radio-friendly work, such as the single “Conquistador,” will be disappointed — there are singles here, interspersed, along with some B-sides amid the album tracks; but after “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” the emphasis is on musical import and significance. These discs carry us on a journey from psychedelic pop through vast conceptual pieces and into this band’s unique brand of sometimes-bluesy progressive pop, filling in some unusual holes along the way, such as their adaptation of Johann Strauss II’s “Blue Danube Waltz” as a closer — live, no less. The probem is that most serious fans will have most of this material already, and certainly all of the essential parts — there are no lost outtakes of the early band to enhance this side of the collection. And the live renditions of “King of Hearts” and “Man with a Mission” stuck on disc two come off as out of place with the surrounding material. And that brings us to the third disc, a collection of live tracks ranging across four decades, from 1969 up through 2007. There obviously wasn’t enough vintage live material to fill a whole CD, but the producers are fooling no one but themselves to pretend that the reunited band’s concert efforts can be equated as being in any way as interesting as the classic material. And a similar problem comes into play, in a more pronounced manner, with the fourth disc, a DVD consisting of video performances that starts off well enough, with a 1974 Danish TV appearance, but then jumps forward 32 years to 2006. As well-recorded as the latter material, which makes up the bulk of the DVD is, and as good as Gary Brooker sounds, it’s still filler — heaps of light, fluffy, insubstantial icing on a somewhat flat (if filling) cake, in an effort to make the latter look bigger and more appetizing than it is. We Got More Soul $24.99 Subtitled The Ultimate Broadway Funk, no one’s going to beat this as the ultimate Dyke & the Blazers compilation. The two-CD, two-hour-and-20-minute set has everything they released on 45 or LP between 1967-1970, including unedited full-length versions of seven of their singles, no less than 13 previously unissued tracks, and even some radio station promos. It could be that less intense funk/Dyke fans might wish for a more succinct single-disc comp concentrating on the official singles, especially as, like many single-artist funk anthologies, the grooves get a little similar-sounding over the course of two-plus hours. Then again, if you like the group enough to get a Dyke & the Blazers collection in the first place, you might well be the type who thrives on such lengthy dwellings on the primeval funk groove. And as such grooves went, few were better (and very few artists, if any other than James Brown, did them earlier) or earthier than Dyke & the Blazers, even if it turns out that session musicians (including members of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band) often played the parts of the Blazers in the studio. The anthology is conveniently divided into one disc of their 1966-1967 sessions (all held in Phoenix, where the band was based at the time) and a second of their 1968-1970 sessions (which all took place in Hollywood), though the quality remains consistent throughout. That counts the many unreleased tracks, which are generally up to the standard of what the band officially released, including some (like the ultra-kinetic — if marred by some out-of-tune horns — &”She Knows It,” the upbeat “Let’s Do It Together,” and the untypical serious ballad “Why Am I Treated So Funky Bad?”) that would have ranked among their more interesting efforts had they been issued at the time. It’s not until about the seven-minute mark that the pianist plays a straight tone, which — when it finally comes — is a huge release. Perhaps it’s the weight of historical precedent or expectation, but often the prepared piano never has sounded complete; the amputated overtones and the sound of various knick-knacks bouncing around on a piano’s strings have an artificial cast that in large doses can be alienating. As built, the piano is such a marvelous instrument. To willfully mangle the sound seems a bit perverse. Of course, when John Cage and Henry Cowell first started sticking things into the piano’s strings that weren’t supposed to be there, it was in the name of musical experimentation. A noble enterprise, to be sure, especially when used as a device as part of a concept that also exploits the instrument’s more typical qualities. Such is the case with Papadimitriou. He’s not only able to coax an enormous variety of sounds from the altered instrument, he’s also able to combine those with its natural sounds to form a convincing personal aesthetic. When playing it straight, Papadimitriou’s touch is remindful of Keith Jarrett. Much of his strumming has a zither-like quality; he’s also adept at drawing rich, sustained drones that put digital synthesis to shame. The set has an ebbing and flowing quality. Occasionally a constant pulse will push the music forward, but, for the most part, tension and release result from contrasts in texture and timbre. Agouridakis’ role is not unlike the pianist’s. He has a complimentary dynamic sensibility, and his playing has a decidedly melodic bent. Both are fine musicians, and they work in tandem quite well. Although Papadimitriou takes composer credit on all cuts, most (with the exception of the closing “Festive Blue”) have an open, freely improvised feel. Papadimitriou and Agouridakis’ music — a hybrid of free jazz, Greek folk music, and experimental European-derived art music — is agreeable and easy to recommend. ~ Chris Kelsey |

Singles Plus $32.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute, harmonica); Mike Pinder (vocals, keyboards); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums).This Dutch compilation approaches the Moody Blues’ career from an unusual angle. Although scoring three Top Ten hits in its native U.K. and another three in the U.S., the group is known primarily as an album act, having reached the Top Ten of the LP charts six times in Britain and eight times in America. During their initial period, 1964-1966, when Denny Laine was the lead singer, they were a singles band (as all rock & roll performers were then), but they had only one hit single, “Go Now!” Their real success came with the release of the album Days of Future Passed in 1967. By compiling all (well, almost all) of their A-side singles, the makers of this two-CD set have created not only a greatest hits collection, but also a rarities album. That is because, of the Moody Blues’ first ten U.K. singles, only “Go Now!” and both sides of their sixth single, “Stop!”/”Bye Bye Bird,” were included on their 1965 debut album. A 1993 CD reissue of that album added the singles “Steal Your Heart Away” and “I Don’t Want to Go on Without You,” included here, but that still leaves six tracks included on the present collection — “Everyday,” “Boulevard de la Madeleine,” “This Is My House (But Nobody Calls),” “Life’s Not Life,” “Fly Me High,” and “Love and Beauty” — that have not been much heard since their release as British singles in 1965-1967. The last two titles date from after the reconfiguration of the band in 1966 with the departure of Laine and Clint Warwick and the recruitment of Justin Hayward and John Lodge, and represent the first recordings of the band’s most successful lineup. All of this is to say that The Singles+ should be sought out by Moody Blues fans who don’t know this early material. The changeover in style after the first ten tracks on the first CD, from a blues-based group to more of a folk-pop one, is so extreme that this is one band that probably should have changed its name when its personnel changed, and it’s no surprise that the later group has suppressed its early music ever since. From the appearance of the 13th track on the first CD, the second lineup’s biggest hit “Nights in White Satin,” The Singles+ plays as a standard compilation of the Moody Blues’ most familiar tracks. The compilers add a couple of album-only songs from On the Threshold of a Dream and include hits by the duo of Hayward & Lodge and by Hayward solo during the band’s mid-’70s hiatus. Songs that became American but not British hits, such as “Tuesday Afternoon (Forever Afternoon)” and a series of U.S.-only 1980s singles like “Gemini Dream” and “Your Wildest Dreams,” have also been included. Discographies list a non-charting 1984 single release of “Under My Feet” from The Present that seems to have escaped the compilers’ attention, but otherwise this is a thorough collectio |

It was billed as “An Evening of Yes Music Plus,” which provided the title to this live set, and also embroiled the group in much of its legal battle. The CD here represents a live return to form for this lineup. They were essentially the Yes of old, while the “YesWest” lineup was off doing their more pop-oriented approach to music. This double disc really does hold up well, even as a Yes album. The recordings here are quite well done and focus more on the prog side of the musical structures. The material chosen is based mostly on classic Yes material, but includes quite a few cuts that were featured on ABWH’s studio release. The only major complaint on this disc is that Tony Levin (who performed on the studio CD and most of the tour) was ill during the recording of this show, and therefore not featured here. That is not the case here. 100 Plus Belles Chansons contains five discs ranging from the beginning to the all-too-soon ending of Brel’s storied career. He recorded often and performed even more. This set serves not only as a detailed introduction to the great singer and songwriter, but also as a defining one. These choices are all inarguable, even if there could have been many more. The Medieval Jazz Quartet Plus Three $14.99 In one of the more unusual and challenging forms of classical jazz, Bob Dorough and friends conceived The Medieval Jazz Quartet Plus Three to showcase the noble recorder in all its myriad shapes and sizes, in soprano, alto, tenor, and bass octaves. Singing just a bit but playing the recorder in the main, Dorough and his woodwind quartet plus a talented rhythm section interpret standards in a manner that might sound a bit whimsical, but is actually an honest and faithful re-creation of these tunes with a very different sonic palette. Guitarist Al Schackman is an integral part of these arrangements, while young bassist George Duvivier and drummer Paul Motian set the rhythmic wheels in a jazzy swing against the Baroque chamber sound of the recorders. The swinging aspect of the well-known song “How High the Moon” is given somewhat of a goofy flair, with segments for duets and trios within, but they all come together nicely. The four recorders play in tandem during “September Song” following a vocal passage by Dorough in slow, easy swing and stop-time passages. A darker, slinky, and stealthy approach to the obscure “Chloe” moves into easygoing swing, while “Lady Be Good” sports a vocal and three alto recorders. The four woodwindists play richly harmonic tenor recorders, crisscrossing among themselves during the solemn but startling “Mood Indigo,” while the recorder consort alone brings Bach’s style into the proceedings on “Autumn Leaves.” A bouzouki and krumhorn are added in the Middle Eastern-tinged version of Eden Ahbez’s “Nature Boy,” a slow and lugubrious, mysterious take with producer Irv Kratka playing finger cymbals, adding to the exotic flair of the piece. This recording was done in 1961, a bold step considering Stan Kenton’s usage of the little-known mellophone in his big band, and that world jazz music per se had not really been established by anyone except Yusef Lateef. Medieval might be a misleading moniker, but these pleasant sounds deserve a revisit from someone, in that their depth and passion are well represented on this most intriguing experiment. ~ Michael G.
