The band always went through dizzying personnel changes, and there isn’t one original member of the band left here. However, that’s not important to fans, because Molly Hatchet are an entity more than a vehicle for specific personalities. Lyrically, Kingdom of XII gives props to its core audience: bikers, veterans, blue-collar workers, and residents of Dixie. Musically, Molly Hatchet always represented the hard rock side of Southern rock, and many songs on Kingdom of XII illustrate this. The band is led by two longtime members — lead guitarist Bobby Ingram and keyboardist John Galvin — and vocalist Phil McCormack is a dead ringer sonically for original growler Danny Joe Brown. That’s not a criticism of McCormack, either. It’s important to pull off old classics live, but he’s also Ingram’s main songwriting partner. “Why Won’t You Take Me Home” has an infectious pop/honky tonk groove. “Gypsy Trail” and “White Lightning” are shots of hard-rocking boogie, and guest Charlie Daniels adds some wicked fiddle licks. A pounding, respectful cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Tumbling Dice” is fun. “Angel in Dixie” has more of a country flavor than the rest of the songs here. Molly Hatchet are at their most exciting when the guitarists jam their brains out; therefore, the three epics on Kingdom of XII are the highlights. “One Last Ride” features strong vocals and lyrics from McCormack, but the blowout guitar riffing at the end is terrific. The dramatic keyboards in “Dreams of Life” add depth to the guitar bombast. Ingram and Galvin were once part of Brown’s band and the fantastic “Edge of Sundown” is an acoustic version of a song from Brown’s 1981 solo album. ~ Bret Adams |

His slashing slide style, hoarse and gruff vocals, and unerring ability to personalize even the most mundane blues lyric provides the template that eventually led to electric Chicago blues and beyond. Patton’s 78s have been collected in several fine packages, including the JSP box called Complete Recordings, Catfish’s three-disc budget box called Definitive Charley Patton, and the last word in all this, the impressive (and expensive) seven-disc Screamin’ and Hollerin’ the Blues from Revenant Records. This attractive double-disc set from Black Swan dispenses with any ephemera and simply presents Patton’s Paramount 78s, and as such contains his best-known songs like “Pony Blues,” the two-part “High Water Everywhere,” “Mississippi Boweavil Blues,” “Down the Dirt Road Blues,” and “High Sheriff Blues.” Since Patton’s rhythms and overall approach can be repetitive at times, casual listeners wondering what all the fuss is about might be better served with a single disc that hones things down a bit, but Patton’s work is both the Big Bang and the epicenter of country blues, and picking up a set like this one and going a little deeper is well worth the time. ~ Steve Leggett |

Biography: Cleopatra – Destiny’s Queen - $19.99 This edition of Biography, the long-running documentary series from A&E explores the life and times of Cleopatra. Cleopatra was of Greek heritage and culture. She was of the Ptolemy lineage who ruled Egypt after the conquests of Alexander the Great. A woman of great intelligence, she made the most of her physical charms to strengthen her own position within Egypt, and to save the country from annexation by Rome. After the death of her father Ptolemy XII, she was named joint ruler along with her brother Ptolemy. Wanting the throne for herself, she had Julius Caesar, to whom she bore a son Caesarion, support her claim to the throne against her brother in 47 BC. Not done yet, Antony, by whom she had three children, restored to her several portions of the old Ptolemaic empire, and even gave to their joint offspring substantial areas of the Roman East. The two were later married which did not please Octavian (later known as Augustus Caesar) as Antony was already married to his sister Octavia. Octavian declared war on Antony and Cleopatra and the two were defated in battle at Actium. Cleopatra preferred suicide to being captured and exhibited at Rome in Octavian’s victory parade. Amen - $14.99 The collective crimes against humanity known as the Holocaust have been well-documented since the end of World War II, but lingering questions remain about how much was known about the Nazi mass-extermination schemes outside Germany, and what could have been done to prevent them. Political filmmaker Costa-Gavras confronts this thorny issue in this film, adapted from the stage drama The Representative and based in part on actual events. Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukar) is a German chemist whose work on various government health projects led to him being added to the scientific staff of the Nazi SS. While working on disinfection and water purification programs to stem the tide of typhoid among German troops, Gerstein creates a toxic cleanser called Zyclon B. Gerstein soon learns that the SS has found a different use for Zyclon B — in gas form, it is being used to exterminate Jews and other political undesirables en masse. Gerstein, a man of strong Christian faith, is horrified by this revelation, and he is determined to tell the world in hope of stopping the genocide; however, in Germany, Sweden, and the United States, Gerstein’s story falls on deaf ears. One man who does believe Gerstein is Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a Jesuit with ties to the Vatican and close contact with Pope Pius XII (Marcel Iures). Fontana urges the Pope to speak out against the ongoing massacre, but the Pope declines, believing Russia is a greater menace to the Catholic Church than the Nazis. In time, desperate to spread the word of the holocaust, Gerstein and Fontana find themselves joining ranks with Roman Jews being rounded up by Nazi forces in occupied Italy. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
